Graduate Institute of Veterinary Pathobiology, NCHU
Objectives

The main curriculum of the Graduate Institute of Veterinary Pathobiology is designed with the aim to educate students to study in the field of animal diseases. Based upon the pathology and modern fields of cellular pathology, immunopathology, molecular and toxic pathology, as well as molecular biology, graduate students can further understand the pathogenesis of diseases and improve their diagnosis techniques for the purposes of disease control, prevention and public health. In addition, our principle is also training veterinary students to become veterinary pathologists and improving their research activities. The following categories summarize the goals of the Institute:

  • To improve veterinarians in diseases diagnosis
  • To study on the important epidemic disease, with emphasis on the field of immunology and molecular pathology
  • To use animal models to study diseases among humans and animals, with emphasis on comparative pathology, immunopathology and oncology
  • To study on the diseases of aquatic animals
  • To study on wild animal diseases
  • To improve services for clinical veterinarians on the field of small animal clinics and surgical pathology
  • To study on the reproductive pathology of farmed animals in an effort to treat reproductive disorders and promote efficiency in production
  • To emphasize the research on toxicology for reducing environmental destruction and waste of natural resources
Faculty

Full time faculty:4 Full Professors, 3 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professor.

Curriculum

Veterinary pathology core curriculum

In addition to undergraduate veterinary pathology training, students are required to take advanced courses including diagnostic pathology, comparative pathology, immunopathology, molecular pathology, histopathology, oncology, experimental animal pathology, toxicological pathology, avian pathology, aquatic animal pathology, wild animal pathology, reproductive pathology, neuropathology, nutritional pathology, and imaging pathology.

Seminar and dissertation research

Students need to fulfill the requirements on conducting independent research, data collection and literature review during the course of their seminar and dissertation research. In addition, students are trained to express themselves clearly in seminars, as well as design experiments, analyze data and deduce logical conclusions.

Related core curriculum

In the effort to provide students with a solid foundation to conduct research, the following courses are emphasized: special topics in biochemistry, molecular immunology, molecular biology and biotechnology, cellular immunochemistry, advanced microbiology, and special topics of large and small animal diseases.

Clinical applications of veterinary pathology

In addition to strengthening their knowledge in veterinary anatomy, students are required to participate in discussions concerning topics including diagnostic pathology, histopathology, surgical pathology, clinical pathology and case studies.

Others

Students are encouraged to select related courses to broaden their overall knowledge and interest. Such courses are offered by the Department of Veterinary Medicine, the Graduate Institute of Veterinary Medicine, the Graduate Institute of Veterinary Microbiology, and the Graduate Institute of Veterinary Public Health.s

Future Directions

Animal Diseases Diagnostic Center

The College of Veterinary Medicine and Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine have collaborated to establish a "Animal Diseases Diagnostic Center", whose goal is to further existing collaboration between government and university in order to advance disease diagnosis. This collaboration will effectively control epidemics and take appropriate measures in animal disease prevention. The Diagnostic Center will work closely with Taiwan’s county and city animal disease prevention stations to prevent potential disease outbreaks and to promote the research standards of veterinary pathology.

Research Standard Improvement

Graduate Institute of Pathology can certainly improve research standard, participate in international scholar exchanges and research collaborations. Institute will accept government or civilian research projects and encourage faculty members to publish their research findings in domestic and international scientific journals. Moreover, all faculty members of the Institute are also members of the Association of Veterinary Histopathology of Taiwan, which meets 8 times each year at seminars and participate in editing publications by the Association. In addition, the Institute invites domestic and international scholars to present lectures and promote the exchange of knowledge.

Research and Development

Research by the Institute is geared toward the advancement of biotechnology. Research and development are undertaken with great endeavor in the development of animal vaccines and diagnostic kits to compete in the international arena. In addition, the Institute works closely with local public health and human medicine services, combining cellular immunology and molecular biology to establish a diagnostic analysis system for experimental animal immunology and molecular pathology.

Education Strengthen

With aims to promote the development of biotechnology industry and to facilitate the establishment of the Animal Research Center, the Institute will further strengthen the education of students with emphasis on toxicological pathology and experimental animal pathology so as to foster well qualified researchers to meet future demands.

Services and Job Opportunities

Our Institute is committed to train veterinary pathologists for the following organizations in Taiwan:

  • related research Institutes and Universities
  • animal disease diagnostic centers
  • biopharmaceutical and biotechnology industries
  • city and county animal disease prevention institutes
  • public health and food animal inspectors
  • wild animal veterinarians
  • public and private animal and aquaculture institutes
  • domestic and international veterinary pharmaceutical and vaccine industries
  • public and privately owned zoos
  • various animal clinics and hospitals
Extension Services

Training

Based on Taiwan's current economic growth and the society's increasing trend of pet animal ownership, it is predicted that there will be a shortage of professional veterinary pathologists. Thus, it is the goal of this Institute to improve the training of veterinary pathologists in order to fulfill this anticipated need.

Counseling

The Institute participates in agriculture counseling and establishes appropriate regulations, as well as helps in disease diagnosis and prevention of agriculture animals.

Industry Cooperation & Farm Aids

The Institute assists industry in establishing and executing avian health programs and disease diagnosis. In addition, the Institute trains personnel to participate in the first line of disease diagnosis and provides on the job training. Cooperating with industry and aiding farms in disease diagnosis and animal vaccinations are also provided.
